Coconut chutney is an essential side dish served as a dip with South Indian tiffin breakfast like Idli, Dosa and Medu Vada. We are fond of coconut chutney and sambar served with idli, dosa and vada. In fact my mom-in-law who is actually a Punjabi, loves South Indian food, especially masala. Making south Indian coconut chutney for dosa and idli is very simple; just blend fresh coconut with chillies, curd and ginger and mix tempered mustard seeds.

Steps to make Idli with coconut chutney:
  1. Method - Wash and Soak udad dal and rice separately for 7 to 8 hours.. again wash and grind udad dal and rice separately than mix togather in one big pot.. while grinding rice add small cup of cooked rice.. keep it a side for 10 to 12 hours to ferment.. after fermataion of batter add salt and mix now greas idli Stand with oil and pour batter into the cup of the stand..
  2. Meanwhile in the cooker pour 1 and 1/2 Glass of water.. put idli Stand into the cooker remove whistle close the lid and steam idli for 10 to 15 minutes.. idli is ready now..
  3. Chutney Method - In a mixer jar add coconut daliya green chillies cumin seeds small bunch of coriander and salt add little water and grind into fine paste and put in the one bowl now in one small pan add 3 tablespoon of the oil and put the pan on gas to heat now add mustard seeds Green chillies curry leaves and asafoetida.. when Musterd crackle pour the tadka in the chutney bowl mix it.. chutney is ready..
