- Get 1 pinch Salt
- Make ready Water
- Take <‘Goma-ae’ Sauce>
- Make ready 2 tablespoons Toasted Sesame Seeds *ground
- Take 1 tablespoon Sugar
- Take 1 & 1/2 tablespoons Soy Sauce
Goma-ae is a popular Japanese side dish consisting of vegetables dressed with sesame sauce. The most popular goma-ae variety is made with spinach that is topped with sesame seeds and miso paste. Satoimo are known as taro or coco yams. They are often simmered as nimono dishes in Japanese cooking.
Instructions to make ‘Goma-ae’ Satoimo (Taro):
- Grind Toasted Sesame Seeds, add Sugar and Soy Sauce and mix well to make sauce. *Note: See ‘How To Grind Sesame Seeds Using A Plastic Bag’
- Peel Satoimo (Taro) and cut if large. Make all pieces similar bite-size. Place in a saucepan, cover with Water, add a pinch Salt, and bring to the boil. Cook over medium low heat until soft, then drain.
- Combine cooked Satoimo and the sauce well.
Only just found out that 'satoimo' is apparently taro? I had heard of taro, but apparently never bothered to look up satoimo before. Goma-ae (胡麻和え), sometimes also spelled Gomaae or Gomae is a Japanese side dish. It is made with vegetables and sesame dressing (goma meaning sesame and ae meaning sauce in Japanese). One of the most common versions, often found at Japanese restaurants in the West.
