Braised tofu is one of my favorite go to dishes when I'm in a hurry. Tofu is a great source of protein and excellent at absorbing flavor. My friend Alissa first introduced me to braising tofu and I've been. Today's recipe is dubu-jorim (spicy braised tofu).

Instructions to make Braised Tofu:
  1. Cut tofu into thin slices and fry in sesame oil
  2. In a small bowl add mix soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, cayenne, maple syrup
  3. Peel and cut the carrot into small pieces, set aside
  4. After tofu is fried, cut and fry the onion, sliced longways. Add the garlic, salt, pepper, and white scallions.
  5. After onions are cooked, add the fried tofu and soy sauce mix. Sprinkle carrot and some extra raw onion on top. Add one cup of water and bring to boil for 10 minutes
  6. Cut to Green scallions on top and add sesame seeds. Serve hot and enjoy!

It's tofu braised in a savory-spicy sauce and pan fried with caramelized onion, garlic, and green onions, making it juicy, a little spicy. I love the braised tofu served at Chinese restaurants, but at home I like to make it healthier (without the deep frying). In my version, I use a lot of vegetables to make it more filling for a lot less calories. Delicious tofu full of flavor without marinating it!
