The ingredients needed to make Tandoori idli:
  1. Get 1 cup semolina(sooji)
  2. Get 1/2 cup curds (dahi)
  3. Make ready 1/2 cup water
  4. Prepare mustard seeds
  5. Take 1 tsp oil
  6. Take 1 tsp eno fruit salt or 1/4 tsp baking soda
  7. Prepare as needed curry leaves
  8. Get for tandoori marination:
  9. Make ready 1/2 cup thick curds or yoghurt
  10. Make ready 3 tbsp mustard oil
  11. Make ready 3 tbsp gram flour
  12. Take 1 tsp kasuri methi
  13. Take 2 tbsp tandoori masala
  14. Prepare salt as per taste
  15. Get as needed Onion and tomatoes (cubed)

Idli or idly (pronunciation ) (/ɪdliː/) are a type of savoury rice cake, originating from the Indian subcontinent, popular as breakfast foods in Southern India and among Tamils in Sri Lanka. Usually tandoori style dish are done only with mushrooms,paneer and baby corns. But here we have done it with idli. These idli strips are so soft like paneer and they taste too good.

Steps to make Tandoori idli:
  1. First, for making idlis; heat up a pan and add some oil to it along with mustard seeds and curry leaves and roast semolina for around 2 minutes in it. Keep it aside & let it cool for a while.
  2. In a mixing bowl, add curd and water along with the roasted semolina. Add salt as per taste and let it rest for 15 minutes.
  3. After that; heat the steamer well and pour the idli batter into the idli maker. Just before pouring the batter add some eno fruit salt or baking soda to it and mix well.
  4. Steam cook the idlis for 7-10 minutes & then remove form the mould.
  5. You can also use leftover idlis for this recipe. Let the idlis cool down. Meanwhile prepare the tandoori marination.
  6. Add thick curds to a bowl &add gram flour, kasurimethi, masalas and salt to it. Heat the mustard oil on high flame & add this smoked oil into the marination. Mix well and add the cubed vegetables to it. Also add cubed idlis to it.
  7. Keep the marination a bit on thinner side as the idlis will soak up the moisture from the marination. Cover it and let it rest for a while.
  8. Grilling; now to grill the idlis you can use wooden skewers and grill them directly on the gas stove flame or you can grill them on a grilling pan as well. Serve it hot with raw onion, lemon and green chutney. :)

Traditionally tandoori roti are made in a tandoor (a pot shaped clay oven). At homes not all of us have tandoors.
